How Vitamins Rebuild Bone: Osteoporosis

Sunday, April 25th, 2010
osteoporosis
Phil Le Breton asked:

It is never too early to begin supplementing calcium and vitamin D for building bone mass.  Osteoporosis is a common problem among the elderly, but is totally preventable and treatable.  Women especially are at risk, because they can lose up to 5% of their bone mass every year for up to seven years after menopause.  With crippling fractures and death from complications of fractures on the rise, we need to be sure that we are letting people know how vitamins and supplements can help them prevent and treat osteoporosis.

Our bodies only build bone for the first 20-30 years of our lives.  After that, we begin to deplete the stores of calcium that we have.  We lose a lot of bone mass in our 30’s and 40’s.  Some people are already losing bone mass in their 20’s and are unaware of it.  Vitamins and supplements, diet and exercise are crucial to retaining calcium stores.

Your body constantly uses calcium to support your muscles, heartbeat, nerve function, and blood coagulation.  This calcium needs to be in your blood, so your body constantly takes it from your bones.  If you are not getting enough calcium in your diet, then your bones are quickly depleted and left brittle and porous.

Some people don’t understand just how serious osteoporosis can be.  You don’t have to fall down or have some sort of accident to break a brittle bone.  Brittle bones are a lot like porcelain lace and do not have the flexibility of healthy bone.  They are lacking the calcium that makes them hard.  They do not have the healthy living cells of normal bone that are responsible for repairing damage.  Bones can break and crumble with something as simple as a sneeze, bending over, or moving a kitchen chair.

Preserving and constantly replacing your bones stores is essential.  A normal person needs as much as five cups of milk every day to keep up with their body’s calcium requirement and you could need even more if you are pregnant, lactating, or in menopause.  Most people cannot keep up with this requirement, plus, most people can’t even absorb all of the calcium in dairy products.  Better sources of calcium include certain greens, beans and broccoli.  Eating enough of these foods every day is not likely to happen, so supplementing is highly recommended by doctors.

In addition to calcium supplements, you need vitamin D to help the calcium be absorbed.  Many people are unaware that they are vitamin D deficient.  Working indoors, using sunscreen, and relying on milk to provide vitamin D all contribute to becoming deficient.  It is extremely difficult to put vitamin D in milk.  Recent studies show that over 70% of milk samples do not contain nearly the amount of vitamin D that is printed on the label.  Since vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption, most doctors urge patients to supplement with vitamin D and calcium together.

Other vitamins and supplements are important, too.  Magnesium is required to convert vitamin D into an active form and is also essential for shuttling calcium into the bones.  Magnesium usually comes from vegetables, but magnesium is depleted from soil over time, so vegetables now have less magnesium than we might have thought.

Talk to your doctor before you buy vitamins.  Taking the right combination of vitamins and supplements on a daily basis can help you to prevent and treat osteoporosis.  Remember that it is never too early to be concerned with your bone health, so talk with your physician today.

Has anyone been diagnosed with osteoporosis? If so, is there a treatment for it.
I actually do not like to take perscriptions meds for it. There are many bad side effects coming from it now.

Do You Know The One Vitamin You Need For Osteoporosis?

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010
osteoporosis
John Russell asked:

days it’s hard to keep up with all the information about vitamins. The Mayo Clinic recently conducted a study, which is considered the latest information and, surprisingly, the one vitamin that is needed to prevent osteoporosis is the key supplement you should take every day. Our father’s and their father’s knew that malnutrition could cause some diseases and they occasionally discovered that eating certain foods brought cures.

It wasn’t until the early 20th century that nutritionalists and scientists began separating and actually putting names to the various nutrients in foods that became known as vitamins.

In the next hundred years, it was learned that people with a high dietary intake of beta carotene, which the body turns into vitamin A, had lower risks of certain cancers and heart disease. We learned that vitamin E appeared to protect against heart disease and that vitamin D was critical to prevent rickets in children and osteoporosis (or bone softening) in adults.

The perennial question is should we just load up on all these vitamins in supplement form? The evidence from the recent Mayo study says we’ve learned that some vitamin supplements don’t help at all and may even be harmful. The study revealed that smokers and former smokers who took beta carotene supplements actually had higher risks for lung cancer. Surprisingly, for vitamin E, the time-tested randomized trials that are the standard for scientific evidence also show little benefit from vitamin E supplements. In fact, you can get all the beta carotene and vitamin E you need, plus other benefits, by just eating carrots, other vegetables, and fruits. Nuts, fish, and whole grains are also good food sources for vitamin E.

However, for vitamin D (which is also called the sunshine vitamin because your body naturally manufactures it through sunlight) the news regarding supplements is better. Vitamin D not only supports calcium absorption to prevent soft or fractured-prone bones but has been found helpful in preventing other conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cardio vascular disease, certain cancers, muscle and joint pain, and perhaps even multiple sclerosis. It is difficult to get enough vitamin D from the usual sources. Milk and some other foods are fortified with vitamin D but too much sun raises the risk of skin cancer and causes premature skin aging and wrinkling.

Here’s the key:

* A supplement in the case of vitamin D (perhaps as much as 1,000 international units per day) is probably a good idea for most people but the strong recommendation for women as they age.

* To go with the vitamin D, 1,000 mg of calcium is also recommended. For women older than 50, up to 1,200 mg of calcium is suggested. These amounts can be achieved through a combination of food and supplements.

What’s the bottom line? For people who are going to take a supplement, a multivitamin is the best choice, however, be sure you take at least 1,000 mg of vitamin D daily.

DEXA Bone Densitometry For Osteoporosis In India-Health Check Up India

Saturday, April 17th, 2010
osteoporosis
Pankaj Nagpal asked:

DEXA Bone Densitometry For Osteoporosis In India

DXA ( Digital X-ray Absorptiometry) Bone Densitometry is the gold standard for measuring bone mass and detecting Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a bone disorder that can be described as a generalized weakening of the skeleton due to loss of bone and calcium. A skeleton that has been weakened by bone loss is more likely to fracture, and people with osteoporosis have a high incidence of fractures. If all those people with osteoporosis could be identified and treated, a large number of fractures could be prevented.

Until the early 1990s doctors had to rely upon X-rays or bone biopsies to detect osteoporosis. By the time a patient was referred for these tests he or she had almost always had at least one fracture and lost a significant amount of bone. Today a bone densitometry scan can help identify individuals with osteoporosis as well as early osteopenia which would progress to the former if not treated.. This information can help the patient and their doctor make decisions that could prevent further bone loss and future fractures.

Natural Osteoporosis Treatment - in Three Easy Steps

Monday, April 12th, 2010
osteoporosis
Madeleine Innocent asked:

Natural osteoporosis treatment is highly effective, because in most cases the cause is simply a case of a bad diet.

The western diet of high protein in the form of meat, of high dairy consumption, of high processed foods and of little raw fruit and vegetables is basically the cause of most osteoporosis.

Couple that with some of the medications used to treat osteoporosis, most of which do more harm than good, and you have a recipe for poor bone density.

Let me explain.

When you look at wild animals eating meat, it is always accompanied by bones. Meat needs calcium to digest. So if you have a high meat intake, your body has to take the calcium from somewhere, in order to digest the meat. Your bones have the highest source.

Dairy is high in calcium, but it is in a form which is only available for baby cows who have not been weaned. Those of us who have been weaned and who aren’t bovine have a hard time digesting this. And it does you little good, making your body pH acid.

Any gardener will tell you that an acid soil needs calcium. So do you. But in a form that is in natural balance, that you can absorb easily. The best source of this is food. Such as green leafy vegetables. These are high in calcium, in a form that is easily absorbed by your body.

Processed food is food which has been denatured, either by the removal of key nutrients that help digest it (such as wheat germ in flour and molasses in sugar) or has been cooked so much, there is little goodness left.

So avoid processed food.

For natural osteoporosis treatment, first change your diet. Make it high in fresh fruit and veggies, especially green leafy veggies. Eat as much of it raw as you can. Eliminate or cut down on animal protein (meat, chicken, fish, eggs, dairy). Green leafy veggies are high in protein as are nuts and seeds.

Cut out processed food. This can be a tough one, so be creative in your alternatives. Sugar can be replaced with honey. Milk can be replaced with oat or nut milk. Use wholemeal, stone ground biodynamic flour. Avoid soy and artificial sweeteners. They are probably worse than what they are replacing, for different reasons.

The second most important thing to do is to take a supplement. But the supplement should be a superfood, rather than the common isolated and synthetic supplements. Synthetic and isolated supplements are very hard for your body to utilise. At best they go straight through (expensive poo). At worst, they hang up in parts of your body to create problems later on.

Blue green algae is a wonderful superfood, high in easily absorbable calcium and all its related nutrients.

And finally, to complete your natural osteoporosis treatment at home, take the tissue salt Calc phos 6x. Suggested dosage frequency is two to four times a day. This is available from health food stores, homeopaths, naturopaths, homeopathic pharmacies and online.

If your osteoporosis is quite severe, then I suggest you seek the services of a professional homeopath, in addition to the above life changes.

OSTEOPOROSIS

Sunday, April 11th, 2010
osteoporosis
P.Bhargav Kashyap asked:

As a woman ages, and begins edging toward menopause, she produces less estrogen, the hormone that helps control the rate at which calcium is reabsorbed into the bones. As estrogen levels fall, the bones may begin giving up more calcium than they take in. As a result, they get softer, weaker, and more prone to fractures. Doctors call this osteoporosis. While men also get osteoporosis, they suffer from it much less than women.

Doctors estimate that osteoporosis is responsible for about a third of all hip and vertebral fractures in people fifty years and older. It also causes back pain and, in some cases, a stooped posture as bones in the spine weaken and collapse.

                     *************************************************************

                                                 WHEN TO SEE THE DOCTOR

Osteoporosis is a very serious condition that should always be under a

physician’s care. Women going through menopause are especially at risk of

developing osteoporosis. Other things that can increase your risk include

surgery to remove the ovaries, smoking, heavy drinking, not getting enough

calcium, or talking medications such as steroids. If you have any of these

risk factors and haven’t been checked for osteoporosis, it’s probably time to

make an appointment just to be safe.

                     *************************************************************

Once you have osteoporosis, it can be very difficult to reverse. But it’s easy to prevent, mainly by making simple changes in your diet and lifestyle.

Concentrate on calcium. The most important thing you can do to prevent and treat osteoporosis is to get more calcium. All women should get at least 1000 milligrams of calcium a day. Women who are past menopause need even more, about 1500 milligrams a day. Most women don’t get anywhere near those amounts, and that’s unfortunate because it’s very easy to get all the calcium you need in your diet.

Dairy foods are the best sources of calcium. A cup of skim milk, for example, has over 300 milligrams of calcium. A cup of yogurt has a lot more, about 450 milligrams. Cheese is also good. A serving of mozzarella cheese, for example, has over 180 milligrams of calcium.

Even if you’re not a big fan of dairy foods, there are plenty of other places to get calcium. Fortified orange juice, contains about as much calcium as an equal serving of milk. You can also get a lot of calcium in leafy green vegetables, like bok choy, kale, and broccoli.

Ask your doctor about supplements. If you’re not getting enough calcium in your diet, your doctor may recommend that you take calcium supplement, which will easily provide all you need.

Don’t forget the D. Your body needs vitamin D in order to absorb calcium. This is perhaps the easiest nutrient to get. All you have to do is spend a little time outdoors. Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin” because your body produces it naturally whenever sunshine touches your skin. You can also get vitamin D by drinking fortified milk.

Consider hormone replacement. Although it’s not for everyone, some women past menopause will benefit from taking supplemental estrogen. Increasing the amount of estrogen in your body will vastly improve the bones ability to absorb more calcium.

Cut back on colas. Colas and other soft drinks contain a substance called phosphoric acid, which can speed the removal of calcium from your bones.

Exercise regularly. Doctors at one time hesitated before recommending exercise to post-menopausal women because it was thought that vigorous activity might increase the risk of fractures in already weak bones. Experts now know, however, that regular exercise – especially weight-bearing exercise, such as walking and lifting weights – can actually cause the bones to take in more calcium, making them thicker and stronger. Swimming is a great exercise because it puts virtually no stress on already weakened bones.
