Physicians have many ways of treating osteoporosis.

None of them are effective.

I take fosomax at my doctors insistence, but can't see how it helps.

Sophie I am sure you can research the subject just as easy as us, and here is a good start.

On words of advice, I would say to you to have a chat to your chemist shop about drugs you do, or think of using, and your doctor.
There are numerous things you can do to help you with the foods you eat, and this link will help you with that one.

I have to be very careful as I have had Malnutrition problems owing to ignorance. It is a strange thing to starve yourself when you think you are feeding yourself well.

Your question is interesting to me as I have been taking fosamax for nearly 10 years. I was taking large doses of calcium too, but cut way back on the after one "Sunday Morning House Call" program when Dr Isadore Rosenfeld discussed it. I am going to discuss it with my Dr and it is really time I made an appointment as it has been quite a while!

The program I mentioned is very informative, The Doctor is extremely credentialed and I put a lot of stock in what he says.

"Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld is the Ida and Theo Rossi Distinguished Professor of Clinical Medicine. Throughout his career as a Cardiologist at NYP-Weill Cornell, ..."

Took that brief statement from google.

Doctors test bone density by forcing a needle into the bone and measuring the pressure required. Silica is the answer, and it can be purchased at any health food store.

It's silica which increases bone strength, not calcium. Talk to a holistic health physician. All calcium supplements can do is keep the body supplied so it will not pull calcium from the bones. Silica builds new bone, exercise strengthens old bone. Calcium supplements keep a ready supply of calcium for body function so the body will not leach it from the bones.

If you take calcium, it should be an organic source, not a mined inorganic source. Organic calcium can be assimilated by the body, inorganic calcium causes kidney stones and many other problems.

I would be more afraid of getting osteoporosis than having the possibility of calcium deposits. Because of osteopenia (a precursor to osteoporosis), I have been taking Calcium + D for years with no ill effects. You should talk to a a trusted physician (even get a second opinion if necessary) before beginning a course of self-treatment.

Good luck. I do hope you can avoid osteoporosis.

EDIT: I am scheduled to have my annual bone density test next week. It takes about five minutes of lying on an exam table while a machine scans bones in the pelvic region. No needle poking. No pain.

Without medical treatment (which has included fosomax), my osteopenia would have progressed to osteoporosis by now. Proper treatment monitored by a competent physician definitely helps prevent or lessen the effects of osteoporosis. Just today I ran across a couple of articles on how to prevent osteoporosis. If interested, you can read them--"Best Bone Builders" & "Better Bones"--at spryliving.com

They will do a bone density test. Depending on the results they may prescribe oral medication and recommend calcium and/or Vitamin D supplements. More and more osteoporosis is being treated with Reclast, a once a year infusion.

I first had the bone density test.

My doctor prescribed the once a month Boniva pill and OS CAL 500 + D twice a day.

He also wants me to drink milk and orange juice and also plenty of cheese in my daily diet.

I think it helps me. I should have started this much sooner - right after menopause.

Hope this helps.
